Dear Parents,
My name is Mrs. Joelyn Carley and I will be your child’s 6th grade math teacher. I am looking forward to working with you and your child in reaching his/her full potential. We will have many wonderful experiences and opportunities to learn and grow in the days ahead.
Sixth grade is an important year for mathematics students as they continue to learn the foundational skills needed to be successful in order to understand the higher order math that will be required in high school. Highlights of the course include learning the concept of rates and ratios and using these tools to solve word problems. Students will learn how to quickly and accurately divide multi-digit whole numbers and also how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals. Students will extend their previous work with fractions and decimals to understand the concept of rational numbers. Lastly, students will learn how to write and solve equations and apply these skills in solving multi-step word problems.
With implementing Eurkea Math in 6th grade, students will primarily be learning the math concepts here in the classroom. It is my goal to designate 15-20 minutes at the end of each class for students to practice in class these important concepts. Therefore, your child will not have very much homework outside of class. If your son/daughter needs extra help with his/her homework or simply has a question, I am usually available before school around 7:45am and after school until 4:00pm.
At the beginning of each math module, I will send home a parent letter updating you on what we are learning in the classroom and how you can help at home to reinforce concepts that we are learning the classroom. Students and parents can also access my math website at www.iwmscarley.weebly.com for copies of class notes, videos, homework practice, and needed resources. Also, you can be assured that you will receive regular updates on the IWMS school website under the 6th grade link (6th Grade Homework Assignments) on what we have been doing in class, as well as upcoming events and topics.
I firmly believe that the best education will take place when the parents, students, and teachers work together as a team. Please feel free to contact me at anytime if you have any questions or concerns. You can send me a note, email me at [email protected] or call 815-268-7822. For individual concerns, I will contact you by phone, send a note home, or email you.
Working together, we can look forward to a wonderful and exciting school year for your child.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Carley
